My name is Patricia, and I am proud to share how both Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) and Student Support Services (SSS) have changed the course of my life. These TRIO programs have given me the support, tools, and encouragement I needed to return to college and stay the course—and I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
When I first started college years ago, I didn’t have the guidance or resources I needed to succeed. I struggled alone, eventually became overwhelmed, and dropped out without earning my degree. It was a hard experience—and one I never wanted to repeat.
But everything changed when I discovered Veterans Upward Bound. VUB helped me reconnect with my educational goals and provided the encouragement and structure I had been missing. Their refresher courses reactivated my academic mindset and gave me the confidence to try again. More importantly, they walked with me through every semester, offering mentorship, resources, and a consistent presence I could count on.
Then, as I progressed further into my academic journey, Student Support Services became another crucial part of my success. SSS provided tutoring, academic coaching, and personal support that helped me stay on track and keep moving forward. They offered practical tools, but also believed in me when I needed it most.
Together, these two TRIO programs—VUB and SSS—have made all the difference. I’m now about a year away from graduating, and my grades, motivation, and confidence are stronger than ever. I’ve gone from dropping out to thriving, and I know that wouldn’t have happened without their combined support.
It’s also been incredibly moving to see how these programs are helping so many others, especially fellow veterans and first-generation students who just need someone to believe in them and walk alongside them.
I am forever grateful to Veterans Upward Bound and Student Support Services. They don’t just help students—they change lives. And I hope my story helps show why protecting and funding these TRIO programs is so critically important.
